The James Paget University Hospital is urging people to only use A&E in a “genuine emergency” amid high demand.

The hospital is said to be “very busy” and is working with healthcare partners to reduce pressure as a matter of priority.

However, much of the strain could be alleviated if those in need of non-urgent medical treatment seek care through alternative sources.

Those who are unsure which NHS service they require should call 111 and speak to an advisor, who will assess symptoms before directing callers to the appropriate service.

The out-of-hours GP service can also be reached by dialling 111 if you feel your medical problem cannot wait until the next day.

Alternatively, duty pharmacists can offer advice on a wide range of long-term conditions and common illnesses such as coughs, colds and stomach upsets.

Your pharmacist is able to offer advice without an appointment and will advise if further medical attention is needed.
