The Palliative Care East Appeal
The Palliative Care East charity, launched in 2006, has the ultimate
goal of building a £1.5m Palliative Care East Centre in the
grounds of the James Paget University Hospital.
It will provide much-needed care to patients living in the Great Yarmouth
and Waveney area. With professionals and volunteers working under
the same roof, organisers say it will bring together first-class clinical
care, complimentary therapies, psychological and spiritual support,
and practical advice on social care and financial matters.
Hundreds of devoted fundraisers across the Yarmouth and Waveney area
have supported the appeal bringing the total raised so far to an impressive
£800,000. Support from local businesses has also been crucial
in securing vital funds.
What is palliative care?
Palliative care supports patients and families whose lives are affected
by incurable illness such as cancer or motor neurone disease.
Appeal organisers say a holistic approach to care helps patients
and families to come to terms with the situation and to live out the
time that remains as fully as possible.
Palliative care is not just about effective pain managements and symptom
relief but also offers emotional, spiritual and practical support,
they add.
