About Great Yarmouth and its history
January 31 is a date that will forever remain prominent in the
minds of older Great Yarmouthians and east Norfolk coastal residents.
Every year, when the calendar turns, their thoughts inevitably think
back to that fateful Saturday night in 1953 when devastating floods
surged in to cause death, damage and danger.
The entire British holiday camp industry owes its origin to a Caister
landowner, John Fletcher Dodd, who pioneered the holiday camp which
has developed from his concept almost a century ago into the up-market,
all-mod-con centres of 2005 that provide the entertainment and facilities
of such range and quality that their guests need not venture beyond
the gates unless they want to do so.
