Archant

The year 1978 was a pretty good one for Great Yarmouth and Gorleston with several famous faces dropping in to visit.

June 21, 1978 - Margaret Thatcher won the Conservative party, and is pictured visiting Richards Shipyard, Southtown, Great Yarmouth. June 21, 1978 - Margaret Thatcher won the Conservative party, and is pictured visiting Richards Shipyard, Southtown, Great Yarmouth.

But it was also the year the Eleni V tanker foundered off the coast spilling oil onto the beaches, and was blown up at sea.

Can you spot yourself or a family member in these pictures from our archives? It’s only 40 years ago!

We hope they bring back memories - and watch out for more as we delve deep into the past - in pictures.

Enjoy!
