A chess tournament concluded unexpectedly after a weekend of tournaments.

The annual event, held at Great Yarmouth Racecourse, attracted around 100 players from across the UK.

Eversley Lodge Nursing Home sponsored the event where Ipswich's David Spence and London's Harry Zheng both won the Great Yarmouth Open title.

This came after Mr Spence unexpectedly beat International Master Alan Merry in the final round.

Steve Moore, from Norwich Dons Club, and Parin Suchak from Leicester tied for first place in the Major tournament.

The Minor tournament also ended in a tie, between Clive Le Bague, Michael Sturman and Graham Lawrence.

John Wickham, the tournament controller, said: “I would like to thank Kingsley Healthcare, who are building Eversley Lodge, for sponsoring an event that brings hundreds of people to the town, giving a valuable boost to the early season tourism economy.”

Stephen Pullinger, Kingsley marketing director, said: “It has given us the opportunity to tell people about the great care facility we are building for the local community."
