£28.6m sea defence scheme announced in Great Yarmouth

PUBLISHED: 10:54 07 February 2013 | UPDATED: 10:54 07 February 2013

A £28.6m sea defence scheme won approval today, offering more than 4,000 homes in Great Yarmouth protection from the devastating effects of flooding.

More than 660m of flood wall will be replaced in Cobholm and Southtown and other flood defences will be repaired.

As well as protecting 2,000 homes from significant flood risk, the scheme will reduce the risk of flooding to a further 2,000 homes.

It is hoped work will start in April this year with completion in December 2015.

The cash has been allocated from a £120m acceleration and economic growth fund announced in the 2012 Autumn Statement to speed up the construction of around 50 schemes in England.
