The number of patients visiting A&E with injuries sustained from “slips and falls” has risen since the Beast from the East took hold of the region.

James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston has seen an increase in the number of patients complaining of such injuries.

A spokesman for the hospital said: “We have had an increase in people coming to A&E reporting injuries through slips and falls.

“But also more people with respiratory conditions which can be exacerbated by the cold weather have visited A&E.”

Earlier today the hospital postponed outpatient appointments with the exception of those which are “clinically urgent”.

The spokesman said: “This enabled us to focus on providing ward-based care to our patients.

“Our staff have gone above and beyond – making tremendous efforts to get to work and staying extra hours to help care for our patients.”

The spokesman also thanked the “tremendous support” from the local community both today and yesterday, in particular 4x4 drivers who assisted staff getting to and from hospital.
