A charity golf day recognising the good work of the East Anglian Air Ambulance has been held.

The event was organised by Marcus Bishop, whose father Glyn experienced first-hand the terrific quality of care offered by the air ambulance.

Glyn, who lives in north Lowestoft, was playing golf in November 2014 at Gorleston Golf Club when he suffered a life-threatening heart attack on the 18th hole.

Fortunately, three of Glyn’s friends were there to come to his aid, before the air ambulance arrived to take him to Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, where he had an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) fitted, a device which monitors heart rhythm.

In addition to the joint effort of his quick-thinking friends Alan Bidwell, John Smith and Andy Crisp, the service provided by the air ambulance, saved Glyn’s life.

The competition was hotly-contested by 17 teams. Picture: Helen Bishop The competition was hotly-contested by 17 teams. Picture: Helen Bishop

Nearly three years later, Marcus organised a charity golf day on the course at Caldecott Hall near Great Yarmouth as a way of saying thank you to the air ambulance and his father’s friends.

Seventeen teams took part in the event on August 11, with all proceeds going straight to the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

“The air ambulance does a magnificent job and I would say that a lot of people know someone who they have cared for,” said Marcus.

“We managed to raise over £3,600 on the day which is a lot more than we expected; that money won’t even fund two flights because the cost to send out an air ambulance is so expensive, but we just wanted to say thank you.”

The day’s competition was a hotly-contested affair, with first place eventually taken by the team from Vauxhall Mallards Cricket Club, who won a three-day golfing holiday donated by TM Ski.

A raffle and auction were subsequently held, featuring a host of prizes generously donated by a number of local businesses.

“It was a really nice course to play on and good day was had by all,” added Marcus.

“The weather was spectacular, the whole day was brilliant and so many people have already been asking for me to organise another.”
