A festival celebrating Norfolk asparagus will be held at a family farm near Great Yarmouth this weekend.

The Tacons have been growing the crop in Rollesby for more than 30 years, along with other fruit and vegetables, which are sold through the family’s farm shop and local retailers.

This year, the farm is hosting its second Asparagus Festival and Food Fair on Sunday, May 20, from 10am to 3pm.

The event is free to attend and will include local producers’ food stalls, craft activities, cookery demonstration by Mark Dixon of the Kings Arm at Fleggburgh, and refreshments. Local producers attending include Norfolk Apple Juice, Ollands chutneys, Ferndale cheeses, Marsh Pig and Hirsty’s bbq.

Refreshments will be in aid of Brain Tumour Research.

Asparagus is a very labour-intensive operation, with the picking, cleaning, grading, and bundling all carried out by hand. The spears can grow 7ins in one day and are cut when they are about 8ins tall.
