A reminiscent day for elderly Caister residents marked the centenary of the First World War - while celebrating the achievements of the nation’s older generation.

Memorabilia and stories from the 1914 - 18 era formed the backdrop for the special event at Claremont House while music, film and poetry from the war filled the Yarmouth Road residential home.

Friends, family and the community were invited to join in the activities, held on Wednesday to mark UK Older People’s Day which recognises the contributions of the nation’s elderly generation.

The afternoon carried a remembrance theme and everyone taking part was invited to plant poppies in the home’s garden in memory of a loved one.

Residents and family also gathered to remember those who had lived and died at the home, and money raised on the day will be donated to the Royal British Legion.

Christine Morgan, manager at Claremont, said residents had “loved” the activities, particularly a sing-a-long of war era songs such as It’s a Long Way to Tipperary.

“We had poetry reading, people sharing stories and some of the residents did some readings,” she added. “There was some sad moments with the reading of some of the poems but when we did the songs they all got into that, they all love their music.”

Visitors enjoyed a high tea with cucumber sandwiches and poppy
seed cakes before residents later enjoyed a war-themed dinner, including bully beef.
