A former news photographer and TV cameraman’s latest assignment was in front of the camera posing with his wife as they celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Bryan and Audrey Colton met in their home city of Sheffield and moved to Norfolk soon after they married when Bryan was taken on by the EDP.

The couple had visited friends in Watton and on a whim called into the Norwich office, then in London Street, in the hope of finding a vacancy.

Mr Colton, 83, was working at the Sheffield Telegraph and Star when he first met Audrey in her family’s pub.

With the main dance hall also a stone’s throw away the pair soon became part of each other’s social circles and then an item.

They married at Sheffield Cathedral surrounded by 160 guests.

But since 1958 they have made Norfolk and now Caister their home; Audrey throwing herself into full-time work and raising their two children Debbie and Bryn, who also went on to become an EDP picture editor.

Bryan branched out into TV journalism, working for Anglia Television for some 30 years documenting breaking news across Great Yarmouth and the emergence of the offshore oil industry.

Audrey, originally a hairdresser moved into accounts working for Zapata Drilling and later Watsons Garage as well as a spell working alternate weeks in London.

Audrey said they had both given each other the freedom to lead busy lives alongside each other.

They both enjoy golf, Audrey being a one-time Caister club captain, and were a sociable couple who had always enjoyed nights out dancing.

At 81, Audrey is getting to grips with the computer and has traced her family tree back to 1816. She also enjoys reading and keeping up with the housework and has been a keen fundraiser for the Great Yarmouth and Gorleston Lifeboat and the Samaritans among other good causes.

They plan to celebrate their milestone anniversary on September 17 with a treat trip and to catch up with family and friends too. The couple have two grandchildren.
