Move over Paris and Milan there is a new fashion capital in town - Great Yarmouth.

Last Thursday more than 1,000 people were dazzled by a colourful and in some cases slightly bizarre collection of dresses and garments designed and made by Yarmouth students.

The Ocean Room in Gorleston hosted the largest fashion show yet featuring Yarmouth College and University Campus Suffolk Yarmouth graduating fashion and textile students.

On the catwalk 150 models wore clothes based on an ancient Greek goddess, the Irish coast, playing cards, 1984 and cup cakes.

The collection also featured pieces based on Brazilian carnivals and the countryside of New Zealand.

Mature student Heather Brown had spent countless hours hand dying wool and then looming it to create a Irish-themed jacket.

She said: “I could not find the right colour dye to represent the green of a country meadow so I hand dyed it and then wove the fabric.”

Last week's show also featured 14 bridal wear pieces designed and made by fashion lecturer Caroline Allison for her professional studies degree finals.

BTEC student Julie Simnett also impressed the audience with her knitted jewellery collection inspired by Moulin Rouge.

It is hoped that some of the graduating students will go on to emulate ex-college student Alexa Fell who is a designer for River Island.

Fashion and textile course leader Donna Goddard said: “We all love to do the show and show the talent of our students and the fabulous quality of their work.

“I am proud of all the students involved.

“It is the biggest show yet and it has been quite chaotic backstage.”

The show also saw first year students showing off their handmade fascinators and the models were worked on by hair and beauty students.
