Funding cuts to youth services in Norfolk could leave hundreds of vulnerable young people without support, a charity has warned.

Norfolk County Council is proposing to reduce funding for youth work as part of the cuts it has to make in order to save £111m by 2019.

But the Norwich-based Mancroft Advice Project fears the proposals will result in the closure of vital services supporting young people.

It is urging people to make their views known on the local authority’s online budget consultation.

The charity’s CEO, Dan Mobbs said: “Cutting youth services such as this is a false economy. With specialist support, advice and positive activities, young people have better life chances and more opportunities for the future.

“They are more able to lead independent lives and maintain secure employ-
ment and stable relationships.”

Should the proposals go ahead, various youth services would see either reduced funding or a cut in funding altogether. It is one of four options put forward to save money within the council’s children’s services department.

The local authority has stressed that no decision has been made and people have until midnight tomorrow to take part in the consultation.

James Joyce, chairman of the children’s services committee, said cutting funding to youth services was unlikely to be a popular decision.
