This is the moment a low-flying Hercules plane swooped over a driver near Beccles.

The RAF Lockheed C-130J Hercules C.5 aircraft flew very low over the car of Donya Barnes, who posted the video to Facebook.

Bob Collis, spokesman for Lowestoft Aviation Society said the aircraft was from No 47 Squadron based at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire and this particular version of the Hercules is used by the Special Forces Flight.

When Donna witnessed it, it was probably making its final pass across Ellough airport at about 50ft.

On that day, around 2,15pm on Friday, May 4, it was on a routine NAVEX (navigation exercise), having previously visited RAF Linton-on-Ouse and RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire.

Mr Collis added: “RAF Brize Norton had been in touch with the operators at Ellough (Beccles) airport fully 24 hours earlier so the visit was anticipated.

“The aircraft was in contact with Beccles Radio, the air traffic control centre at the airport, at all times while it was within the airport’s restricted area.”

The parachute school aircraft which is based there and carries out free-fall parachute drops was fully aware of the Hercules visit and was on the ground when the RAF aircraft reached the area.

The Hercules made three low-level practice approaches over the runway, but did not land.

Added Mr Collis: “For one thing the runway at Beccles is too short and the airport facilities are not designed for large military aircraft such as this.

“As with most airports and active airfields, there are signs warning road users of low-flying aircraft.”
