A short but poignant animated film has won “Olympic gold” for a small Norfolk high school.
Four teenagers from Stalham High travelled to the British Film Institute in London last week to pick up their national prize at a star-studded ceremony.
The school had been nominated in the 14-16 years Film Nation animation category, as part of the London 2012 Olympic Festival, for its film “Air Raid over Stalham”, about Elizabeth Hazell’s experience during a second world war bombing raid.
School librarian Julia Lester said the students had to make a film based on one of the Olympic values and had chosen “courage.”
After a brain-storming session, working with Martin Sercombe, from Media Projects East, the four - Jess Falgate, George Fenn, Emily Kendrick and Lucy Lockwood - had decided to interview George’s grandmother Mrs Hazell about her memories of the traumatic event.
The resulting 1.5-minute animation tells the tale from her own mother’s perspective and describes the day she was blown over a fence by a bomb while hurrying with her husband and children, including Mrs Hazell, to her sister’s house.
Stalham High, with fewer than 500 pupils, was among three shortlisted schools from many hundreds of entries, according to Ms Lester.
“They did so well to come from such a small school and win against London and other schools with far more resources,” she said.
The awards event was hosted by Film 2012’s Claudia Winkleman and the students also got to meet other famous names including actor Mathew Horne, who plays Gavin in TV hit series Gavin and Stacey, and Warren Brown, of TV’s Luther and Hollyoaks fame.
Mrs Hazell and Mr Sercombe also attended the ceremony where the Stalham team was presented with a new video camera and trophy.
Ms Lester said the winning film would be shown at Olympic venues over the London 2012 games period.
Other students involved in the film’s production were Bethany Jones and Penny Goodhand.
