They have spent the past few days going above and beyond the call of duty to ensure the safety of others as the Beast of the East has taken its freezing grip on the region and now their efforts have been recognised.

Emergency services staff, including police, ambulance and fire crews and hospital staff, have travelled for hours to get into work and stayed well past the ends of their shifts to ensure patients stayed safe.

Meanwhile police officers and fire crews helped by farmers and other volunteers have been putting themselves at risk to rescue others who have become stranded in the drifting snow.

To recognise those efforts, Archant Norfolk, publishers of the EDP, have distributed free copies of the paper to police and hospital staff.

David Powles, editor, said: “The efforts of our emergency services this week have been nothing short of Herculean and we wanted to at least do something to show our gratitude.”
