Firemen yesterday checked the burned-out shell of a family home for any hot spots after it was destroyed by an overnight blaze.

It is thought an open fire was to blame for the blaze which gutted the thatched farm house on Rectory Road at Sutton, near Stalham, on Sunday evening.

The blaze was attended by more than 70 firefighters using 15 engines with crews brought in from as far away at Hingham and Long Stratton.

One crew returned yesterday morning to ensure nothing was still smouldering, especially in the mountain of thatch pulled from the roof, said watch manager Paul Amis.

The building was too dangerous for anyone to enter, so the checks were done by firefighters using a ladder.

The fire service was on the scene for a total of 16½ hours after first arriving at 6.30pm on Sunday, with relief crews arriving throughout the evening, and leaving following yesterday morning's checks at 11am.

The owners, who were too upset to talk about the fire, escaped the blaze and are staying with neighbours.
