Firefighters have tackled a blaze which gutted an outbuilding of an old vicarage in Burgh Castle this afternoon.

At the height of the blaze, six appliances were on the scene in Church Road.

The fire took hold in a building close to the St Peters and St Pauls Church, near to the Roman fort.

Simon Mason, the incident commander, said: “We were called by the occupier to a fire in one of his outbuildings.

“The building is used for storage of gardening equipment and a car.

“It was quite a sizeable fire and it destroyed a large part of the original brick building.

“The cause may have been a tumble drier, that is one route of inquiry. Investigations will follow.”

The fire has now largely been extinguished with pockets of flames from under where the roof collapsed which fire fighters worked to get under control.
