Due to a speed restriction over defective track between Manor Park and Ilford, trains have to run at reduced speed on some lines towards Shenfield, Southend Victoria and Chelmsford, Greater Anglia said.

Train services running through these stations may be cancelled, delayed by up to 20 minutes or revised. Disruption is expected until the end of the day.

Meanwhile, the derailed freight train is still causing major disruption between Bury St Edmunds and Peterborough.

The last 11 wagons on the 33-wagon train came off the track causing major damage to both tracks just to the west of the Ely North junction on Tuesday afternoon.

Engineers from Network Rail spent Tuesday starting to move the train, but that is likely to take several days. Greater Anglia have now pushed back the expected time it will finish to the end of Monday (August 21), from this Saturday.

Greater Anglia said about the Manor Park and Ilford disruption: “Due to a track defect found at a set of points on the mainline towards Shenfield, trains have to run at a severely reduced speed.

“Due to the congestion expected during the morning peak, train service alterations and cancellations are being implemented.

Train service cancellations and alterations will also apply to this evening peak service.

“Due to the nature of the fault and the components required to replace the defective piece of track, it may take a few days to restore the train service to normal.

“We apologise for the disruption to your train services today.”

On the freight train derailment, it said: “Greater Anglia is unable to operate services between Bury St Edmunds and Peterborough owing to a derailed freight train near Manea.

“Services between Bury St Edmunds and Peterborough have been suspended until further notice.

Network Rail engineers are on site working to recover the derailed wagons, which is likely to take a number of days as they will require to be lifted away by crane. The track is also damaged and will need to be replaced before services can run “again. Further updates and timescales will be released over the next few days.

“A Rail Replacement Bus service will run between Bury St Edmunds and Peterborough.

“Customers at Manea are advised to use the Help Point to arrange onward transport, due to road access issues.

Customers wishing to travel to Ely can use Greater Anglia services between Ipswich and Cambridge, and Norwich and Cambridge.

Customers travelling between Ipswich and Peterborough and beyond may travel via Liverpool Street, your tickets will be accepted on London Underground services. Virgin East Coast, Hull Trains, Virgin West Coast and Great Northern.”
