A season of guided walks, focusing on the rich cultural heritage of the Great Yarmouth borough, is getting underway this month.

Every year between April and October, Great Yarmouth Borough Council runs a programme of Guided Heritage Walks, and each is led by an official heritage guide.

Regularly walks:

Sun, Sea Stars and Circus: celebrating the 250th anniversary of the circus is new, focusing on the role the holiday and entertainment industry.

Quayside and Seaside at Gorleston-on-Sea: explores the stories and local history of the historic seafront, including the demise of the turreted Victorian hotel, how the pier came to be.

Medieval Town Wall: explore this Scheduled Ancient Monument, which dates from the 14th century.

Rows, Fishwives and Red Herrings: the tale of the historic alleyways, and the people who lived and worked in them, and the herring industry.

The Finest Quay in Europe: new walk, taking its name from a description of South Quay by 18th century writer Daniel Defoe, and explores the port’s fascinating history.

Gory Stories on a Wicked Walk: hear about the murders in the Rows and the press gangs that toured the town’s brothels, as well as whippings and hangings.

Tickets £4.50 for adults, £2 children (aged 7-16) and free for under sevens. Tickets available on the day from guide.

Special walks, some of which require pre-booking.

Medieval Town Wall – then and now: learn about the town’s historic defences and the work being undertaken to conserve the wall which remains in parts.

Roman Revelations at a Fascinating Fort: The Roman fort of Burgh Castle, with interactive games and sketches to bring history to life. Fun for all the family.

Caister-on-Sea, 2000 Years of History: new walk to discover how Caister became a heroic lifeboat community from Roman beginnings.

Pirates, Witches and Thieves of Olde Yarmouth: costumed walk in which infamous characters tell darker stories of the town.

Gravestones and Tombstones of Great Yarmouth Minster: the stories of some of the characters laid to rest, including sailors, merchants and circus owners.
