A Yarmouth man captured on CCTV with a 7-inch kitchen knife has been jailed for nine months.

Judge Mark Lucraft watched the footage at Norwich Crown Court yesterday and told Kerry Bane, 43, that knife crimes had to be severely punished

Bane, from Paget Road, was seen in the footage arguing with a man outside Herring House Trust, a resettlement address for the homeless, in the town’s St Nicholas Road, on August 17.

At the end of the altercation, Bane can be seen holding the knife in a threatening manner.

The judge told him: “It’s clear from the footage that you took the knife with you for one purpose alone. “This was in a public place and people can be seen walking by as you hold the knife in your hand.

“Having a knife in a public place is a serious crime and will be treated seriously by the court. A knife can kill someone. It seems that the enormity of what you did has only now come home to you.”

Prosecutor Martin Ivory said Bane, who had pleaded guilty to possessing a knife, arrived at the building to confront a man he said owed him £20.

Ian James, for Bane, said it was out of character and he had never previously had a weapon in public.

Meanwhile, another Yarmouth man, Aderito Ferreira Do Amaral, from York Road, appeared for sentencing at Norwich Crown Court yesterday and was handed a 24-month community order, with a mental health treatment requirement, for stabbing the owner at Bar Mission in the town at about 3am on February 26. The court heard that the 27-year-old, who had pleaded guilty to wounding, stabbed the man with a pocket knife, which left a 3cm wound in his back.
