Great Yarmouth MP Brandon Lewis welcomes schools budget changes

Extra government funding for schools has been welcomed by a Norfolk MP and cabinet minister.

The £1.3bn cash will come from elsewhere in the Department for Education’s (DfE) budget.

Education secretary Justine Greening announced the boost to the core schools budget on Monday and said it was the largest rise in schools funding for over a decade.

Great Yarmouth MP Brandon Lewis said the funding over two years would help to create more good school places in Norfolk.

Mr Lewis said: “This announcement sends a clear message that we are committed to raising standards and giving every child the best possible education and the best possible opportunities for their future.”

The money is being recycled from other parts of the education budget, including £600m of new cuts to central DfE funding, £200m from free schools and £420m to the school building budget.
