Charity fundraisers moved by the plight of a baby boy in hospital in Cyprus have added £500 to a growing fund launched to pay for emergency medical treatment.

Baby Carter from Caister fell ill on holiday and may not be able to fly home because of a potentially contagious rash which is spreading.

His mother Lucy Williams launched an online donation page to pay for his treatment after she unwittingly took him to a private clinic which her insurers say she is not covered for.

In just six hours more than 80 people have donated sums from £5 to £500, totalling close to £2,000.

Among those affected by the story was Rich Stephanetti vice chairman of Great Yarmouth Round Table who immediately contacted the group’s chairman Oliver Hurren to see if they could release a donation.

He got the go-ahead within minutes he said and quickly visited the donation page to add to the total.

“Helping local people is what we are all about,” he said. “And this year we have a particular focus on children and young people.”

The group fundraises throughout the year culminating in the annual Turkey Ball.

Writing on Facebook Carter’s mother said: “Thanks to all that have donated and shared concern. It is so humbling and overwhelming the amount of love and support shown.”
