A Bradwell woman who helped to put Great Yarmouth on the tourism map has died at the age of 63.

Linda Saunders, who died at the James Paget University Hospital on January 5, worked at the town’s tourism department and helped put together Great Yarmouth’s annual holiday brochure and helped to steward seafront fireworks displays.

Before her tourism role Mrs Saunders worked at Courts Furnishers in Market Row, taking payments and ordering furniture.

She then joined the tourism team after Courts was burnt down in September 1995.

Under the leadership of Alan Carr, Mrs Saunders was initially based at the town hall and then moved to the former maritime museum site on the seafront.

In her role in helping to put together holiday brochures she sold advertisements to the town’s guest houses, hotels and attraction owners and planned their layout and proof read them.

She met her future husband David at the age of 15 at the Regent Bowling Alley where they often bowled. They married in 1977.

Her husband David added: “She was a very popular member of staff with the town’s guest house owners. She would stop to talk to holiday makers, asking where they were from and they were delighted to meet the person who had sent them the town’s holiday brochure, which prompted them to pick Great Yarmouth for their holiday.”

Mrs Saunders retired early due to bad health. The couple enjoyed touring the world visiting Hong Kong, Canada, Singapore, America, Dubai, Egypt and Europe.

She often travelled to London to see musicals and enjoying going to rock concerts, seeing the likes of Rod Stewart, Status Quo and the Rolling Stones.

Her husband collected autographs and she would travel with him to attend annual autograph collections in London and Birmingham.

The couple attended star-studded evening dinners, sharing their table with Mickey Rooney, Joan Collins, Tony Curtis, Ursula Andress, Tippi Hedren and Dallas actor Linda Gray.

They also met some of the US Apollo astronauts who walked on the moon, Buzz Aldrin Charlie Duke, Gene Cernan and Alan Bean.
