A Norfolk community has spoken out about the battle to make their roads safer after dashcam footage revealed the terrifying moment three schoolchildren were almost hit by a 7.5-tonne lorry.

Footage obtained from a vehicle travelling the North Walsham Road at Coltishall captured the terrifying moment three young children in their school uniform darted into the road ahead of the oncoming lorry on January 30.

Coltishall Parish Council is in the process of trying to raise £23,090 to install a crossing at this point, as currently families cross the B road at the designated point less than 100 metres from a 60mph zone.

More than 100 new homes now sit on the far side of the junction of the B1150 and Ling Way, meaning the crossing is becoming increasingly busier.

The flow of the traffic also tends to be made up of heavy loads, as lorries and tractors use the route to access the bio-digester at Scottow.

The near miss recorded this week is not the first incident on this stretch of road, after a schoolgirl suffered a minor injury in 2016 from a passing bus.

In their application for funding of £14,045 from the Parish Partnership Scheme fund, the council writes: “In the eyes of villagers, the current crossing point on the B1150 at Ling Way is an accident waiting to happen.”

The acting headteacher of Coltishall Primary, Daniel Mckeown said: “Some parents have come to see me and voiced their concerns about crossing the North Walsham Road and the amount of speeding traffic along this part of the highway.

“This video has caused some concern in the community, as the welfare and safety of the pupils is of utmost importance to us.

“Therefore, in addition to the awareness lessons that we regularly teach, will be reminding pupils about the importance of road safety awareness in our celebration assembly this week.”

County councillor for Coltishall, Tom Garrod commented: “The footage is very scary, and highlights why the parish council are trying to get a crossing put in.”
