TWO policemen remain in a serious condition in hospital after a crash in Lowestoft in the early hours of Saturday.

The driver of a silver Mitsubishi Evolution, who was being followed by officers in a marked police van, failed to stop for officers on Belvedere Road. Police in the van then lost sight of the Mitsubishi, which was involved in a collision with a marked police car on Tom Crisp Way.

Fire crews freed four men, including two policemen, who were trapped in the cars following the crash, which happened at about 1.45am.

Four ambulances were called to the scene to take to them to James Paget University Hospital. The two policemen's injuries are believed to be serious but not life-threatening.

The driver and passenger of the Mitsubishi have now left hospital and are recovering at home.

The road was closed following the incident until about 9am, though Suffolk Police on Sunday refused to disclose the exact location of the collision.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk Police said a 28-year-old man from the Great Yarmouth area had been arrested on suspicion of failing to stop for a police officer and drink-driving. He has been released on police bail to return to Lowestoft police station on March 7.

Investigators from the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) are likely to be brought in to assess the incident,

The IPCC have to be called by local police forces whenever there is an incident involving police, which results in a death or serious injury.
