More than 1,500 people took to their bikes in Norfolk and Suffolk for the annual Tour de Broads which this year set off from Great Yarmouth.

The event, which followed figures from Sport England in April which revealed people in the town are the least physically active in England, proved a huge success.

The routes, ranging from between 25 and 100 miles, took in the sights of Beccles, Bungay, and Oulton Broad as well as the area around Great Yarmouth, meant cyclists made the most out of the beautiful weather on show.

Organised by Neil Turner, director at Pedal Revolution, the event started at 8am with cyclists arriving back in Great Yarmouth throughout the day.

Mr Turner said: “It has been a good day and the weather has been good. We have had an age range from five and three-quarters as he proudly told me to 90, so it has been a great day.

“We have had around 1,500 riders all together. The weather has brought everyone out and it has been a really fantastic day for Yarmouth and for showing off what we have got to celebrate.

He added: “We had 45 people come up from Hornchurch and a big group of people from Yorkshire. It is great to bring people to the town and get them to see what is right on our doorstep.

“When you read stats like the ones we saw recently about Yarmouth being so inactive and such an unhealthy place, it is nice to see that it is not all doom and gloom.”

Every finisher received a medal, free chips and free ice cream, as well as mechanical support, and lunch and drink stops along the way.

Former professional cyclist Daniele Ratto was also at the event to support riders and promote cycling as a sport.

Mr Turner added: “It is events like this which inspire people to come out and on their bikes.

“I am proud to come from Yarmouth and it can be an easy place to knock but when you do an event like this and see people smiling it shows that the town has a lot more to it than the bad headlines you see.”
