New drama groups on the lookout for founding members

People interested in getting involved in amateur theatre and singing can take their cue from two new drama groups and a community choir being launched in Great Yarmouth.

St George’s Theatre are keen for its town centre venue to be the home for a range of arts groups.

A new St George’s Players group is planned, with a production of the Alan Bennett’s comedy drama, The Lady in the Van, which is about the writers unlikely friendship with a homeless woman living in a van on his driveway.

The performances are scheduled for next May with auditions kicking off in the new year.

To whet people’s appetites, St George’s is hosting a production of a Christmas-themed Vicar of Dibley show by Sheringham Players on Saturday, November 25.

This will be a special one off show which will help to raise funds for Comic Relief.

A similar taster for youth theatre which involved a visit by Sheringham Little Theatre’s Little Shop of Horrors, was a success. St George’s director, Debbie Thompson said: “It drew a good attendance and a flurry of interest from young people keen to get involved in Yarmouth.

“It is aimed to start a St George’s young people’s drama group with an inaugural production of a popular youth musical next Easter.”

She added: “We want to be the home for people to get involved with, and participate in, the arts through these drama groups.”

She stressed the new groups would not just need actors, but also people who want to be stage crew, technicians, stage managers and to help with costumes.

St George’s has also recently launched a new community choir. Mrs Thompson said: “It is going to be a people’s choir, where the members chose the kind of music they sing, and where they perform.”
