Care awards celebrate hard work in ‘challenging’ sector

Hard-working staff from Norfolk’s care sector were recognised for their successes at a glittering awards ceremony.

Earlier in the year there were fears the event would not be able to go ahead, but sponsors came through to again put on the night of celebration for the fifth year.

Held at Sprowston Manor on Thursday, the awards demonstrated a wealth of dedication, inspiration and innovation in sector professionals described as “challenging”.

Hazel Evans from Extra Hands, won the Harold Bodmer outstanding achievement award, named after the late former adult social service director of Norfolk County Council.

Mr Bodmer died at the age of 61, after collapsing at a meeting of the county council’s health and social care executive in July 2016.

His widow Julie presented the award in her late husband’s honour.

Kevlin House care home, in North Walsham, scooped double recognition and won excellence in delivering dementia care and the rising star Award.

• Effective coordination of end of life care - Lincoln House

• Delivering excellence through learning and development - Dedicated Care East Anglian

• Excellent person centred care and support - Extra Care Home Services Ltd

• Excellence in delivering dementia care - Kevlin House

• Collaborative working - NANSA

• Motivational leadership - Steven Melton, Black Swan Group

• Promoting dignity and respect in everyday life - Claremount House and Lodge

• Rising star - Leah Mulrooney, Kevlin House

• Team award – Brookland House

• Outstanding Contribution - Hazel Evans, Extra Hands

James Bullion, executive director of adult social services at Norfolk County Council, said: “These awards are important because they’re celebrating the quality of care and putting care in a positive light.”

The awards were supported by Norfolk County Council, Gordon Barber Funeral Homes, Cozen-Hardy LLP, Dementia Friendly Norfolk, Norfolk Independent Care, Archant, City College Norwich, Athena Care, Boots, Ashton Legal, Libby Ferris Flowers, National Care Association and Norse Care.
