A motorcyclist on a therapeutic ride sped down the A47 at 117mph in a bid to “dry off” after a torrential shower, Norwich Magistrates heard.

Neil Carr, prosecuting, said Andrew Hardy, 39, of Thrigby Road, Filby was caught by police near Lingwood on March 18, 2017.

Simon Nichols, defending Hardy, said the project manager was on a therapeutic bike-ride when he drove through torrential rain. Seeing the road ahead clear, Hardy drove at high speeds in order to “dry off”.

Hardy admitted driving over 70mph on a dual carriageway, but argued that exceptional hardship should prevent a six-month disqualification.

Chairman of the bench Jeanne Heal said: “You can tell we are not very impressed.” But the exceptional hardship plea was upheld.

Hardy was fined £666 with a £60 surcharge and £100 in costs, as well as six points on his licence.
