Two ponies and several dogs were among the congregation at Somerleyton’s annual pet service.

Rev Glen Brooks welcomed the pets and blessed their owners at the service at St Mary’s Church on July 15, with prayers thanking God for the companionship animals provide as well as for all of the organisations that exist for their protection and specialist training.

One of the ponies, Duke, was originally a pit pony working and living in the coal mines and used for towing trucks of coal beneath ground. The ponies would come up for a two week grazing holiday once a year. He was retired as late as 1999 and has been in the care of Sally and Simon Phillips for the last ten years and is now about 30 years of age.

Church warden Mary Truman said: “It was a happy and relaxed gathering and £106 was collected for Guide Dogs for the Blind. We thank everyone who came for their support and especially to Helen and Harry from Somerleyton who brought their pony and trap and rescue dog.”

The church’s next special event will be the annual flower festival from September 15 to 17.
