As far as animal enthusiast groups go, this one will take some beating for its devotion.

Members of the Pugs and Squishy Face Breeds of Lowestoft - which also stretches to Great Yarmouth - go to extraordinary lengths to show how much their pets mean to them.

One member of the pug group allowed their pet to be ring bearer at their wedding, while they also hold birthday parties for their pooches.

Now, for the second year in row, the group have put something back to the dog community, raising almost £1,000 for a pug welfare charity.

Sponsored by the businesses of two of the group members - Toni Keable and Jo Oldham - they have produced a calendar filled with adorable pictures of their pugs, which they sold for Pug Dog Welfare and Rescue Association.

Miss Keable, who founded the group, said: “We started the group on Facebook quite a few years ago with just a few members. It was just really as a way of keeping in touch with other pug owners, but now we have more than 300 members.

“In 2016, we thought we’d get together and make a calendar, which went really well so we’ve had another one made.”

Mrs Oldham, whose pug Captain was ring bearer at her wedding, added: “Toni and I decided to sponsor the calendars ourselves so we could make sure more money goes towards the charity.”

Members of the group, along with their pets, gathered at the Avenue pub in Great Yarmouth - which Mrs Oldham runs with husband Colin - to present a cheque for £930 to the pug charity.

Miss Keable, who manufacturers her own beauty product - Ruff Stuff body scrub - added: “Part of our motivation was to raise awareness of rehoming pugs.

“Far too often you hear about people buying a puppy and not realising quite what it takes to keep hold of them and they end up in need of new homes.”

The group can be found by searching Pugs and Squishy Face Breeds of Lowestoft on Facebook.

The calendars have almost completely sold out.
