It is often said that matters of the head and matters of the heart can be conflicting things.

However, in Burgh Castle the two are in perfect harmony, as a pub called the Queen’s Head now boasts something aimed at the heart - a defibrillator.

After months of fundraising - supplemented by an owner willing to dig deep into his own pockets - the pub on High Road has purchased its own defibrillator, placed in prime position on the outside wall.

The piece of equipment, which is open for anybody in need to use, is the second to be installed in the village, after one was added at the Village Hall.

David James, owner of the pub, began fundraising for the kit in the summer, but after raising more than £800, decided to stump out the remaining around himself.

He said: “For a while we had wanted to raise money for something to help our community and had heard a lot about defibrillators being installed in other villages, so decided it would be a good idea to have one here.

“We haven’t had any incidents in the past here that required one and - touch wood - we won’t have to use it, but it’s a big comfort to know it is there.”

Mr James was helped in its fundraising by former world champion boxer Tim Witherspoon, who made an appearance at the pub and auctioned off memorabilia to boost the coffers.

Pub staff have already been trained to use the potentially life-saving piece of kit, with Mr James now waiting for it to be officially registered.

He added: “When we heard about the one at the Village Hall we had already made a little headway with our fundraising, so decided to carry on with it.

“It will be good for us to have, but it is not just for the pub, which is why we put it on the outside on the very front of the building.

“That way it can be seen as clearly as possible so if anybody ever needs it they know exactly where it is.”
