This is a recent photo taken by me in the garden. Most nights I have at least one hedgehog visit. I put food and water out each evening for the hedgehog.

In just the last 10 years, hedgehog numbers have fallen by 30pc, and there are now thought to be fewer than one million left in the UK. They are disappearing from our countryside as fast as tigers are worldwide.

The once common hedgehog is now under threat from development and habitat loss caused by the reduction of hedgerows and increase in intensification of our agricultural landscapes.

A dish of fresh water can be vital in hot weather. Pile up some logs in the corner of the garden. A diversity of plants rich in nectar will encourage insects. A 13 cm hole will allow hedgehogs access through fences. Avoid treating your lawn with herbicide. No single garden is large enough. ‘Hogs make nests from deciduous leaves.
