I made it jump, it bit me, hard. What do I do?

My marathon training was going really well – until I was bitten by a dog.

Now I’m kicking myself (or would be if my leg didn’t hurt so much) for not being more careful.

And I know I should report it but I do feel it was partly my fault.

Superstar husband Rob had taken the girls to their swimming lesson so I could have a good guilt-free 90 minutes to get that week’s long run in my training plan ticked off.

I was running along, muttering a bit as the motivational genre I’d chosen on my free music running app turned out not to be the upbeat feel good rocking tunes I was expecting, but some chap talking about how today was the day I could make a difference and to seize the moment.

I was trying to seize the moment and change him to a good dose of Bruce Springsteen motivation but I couldn’t get the buttons to press on my phone through the hold-it-on-my-arm case and I couldn’t get the phone out of the case without my headphones falling out. I didn’t want to stop and sort it as I needed to run, so I was just chatting back at Mr you-can-do-this.

I came up behind a couple walking their dog, and said a cheery ‘Morning’ as I passed, at which point they nearly jumped out of their skin and their dog, one of those white, broadchested dogs which may, or may not have been a Staffordshire Bull terrier, broke free and sunk its teeth into my leg.

I’m not sure who was more shocked; me, the couple or their dog. They were absolutely mortified, and very apologetic saying she’d never done it before.

I was more cross than anything, as I looked at the teeth marks and the blood running down my leg, that I’d carved out this precious running time and had managed just 17 minutes of it.

They took me back to their house and patched up my wounds, still apologising, and still looking very shocked.

I turned down their offer of a lift home, limped off, tried but couldn’t finish my run, had to have a tetanus injection, and while the row of individual teeth mark bruises on my calf has gone I have two teeth mark scars on my shin – and have barely run since.

If it had been the girls on their bikes and they’d been bitten I wouldn’t hesitate to tell the police.

But I did make it jump, and the owners were so alarmed at her biting I don’t want to make a fuss.

So should I report it?
