There was a sense of shock and surprise in a Hopton pub after regulars were told the news about the massive drug find on the village’s beach.

About half a dozen people were in The Turnstone at about 3pm when they heard the news about the cocaine find.

There were gasps of surprise as the news broke.

One 60-year-old male regular said: “It is very, very surprising because we are a small village. It is the first time I have heard of anything like that here.”

Another male regular in his 60s said that in previous decades the North Sea between this stretch of coast and Denmark and Holland would have seen drugs being dropped off at sea to be picked up by dealers.

He said: “They would drop the stuff at sea off and go away and it would be collected by someone else.

“I am surprised to hear about this cocaine though.”

A female dog walker was taking her four pets along Hopton beach at about 2.30pm. She said she had seen a couple of police officers in a van and was ‘surprised’ no officer had told her to be careful of anything her dogs may have got in contact with.
