Ahead of next week’s heritage conference in the town, we thought we’d share this video from ITV travel show Wish You Were Here.

The YouTube clip is of a VHS copy of the show on a visit to Great Yarmouth.

Next Thursday Great Yarmouth is to host a major national conference exploring the significance of seaside cultural heritage and its role in the future development of coastal resorts.

The all-day event, entitled Wish You Were Here, will bring top heritage speakers and delegates from Norfolk and across the UK to St George’s Theatre on Thursday, October 20.

Organised by Great Yarmouth Preservation Trust, together with the Great Yarmouth Borough Cultural Heritage Partnership, the conference aims to explore and celebrate the significance of seaside heritage, investigating its history as well as the challenges it has faced in the 20th and 21st centuries.

A key theme is to discuss how the cultural heritage of coastal resorts can be harnessed to unlock additional investment, regeneration and economic development opportunities, using Yarmouth as an example of what is being achieved.

Keynote speaker will be Dr Anna Keay, a director of the Landmark Trust, who will discuss the issues and challenges faced by the trust in saving and reviving coastal buildings over its 50-year history.

Dr Keay’s talk will use case studies – from artillery forts to prefabricated housing, fishermen’s cottages to polite villas – to consider how the challenges of these special buildings have been addressed and what the lessons might be for the future.

Following the conference, delegates are invited to Skippings Gallery, at 133 King Street, to view an exhibition of postcards and posters depicting Yarmouth, before returning to St George’s Theatre at 6pm for an optional evening event, comprising a fish and chip supper and the screening of a vintage seaside film.

Cllr Bernard Williamson, chairman of the Great Yarmouth Preservation Trust, who is also vice chair of the cultural heritage partnership, said: “The conference is not just for the experts. Each speaker offers something fascinating and different, especially if you live by the seaside, and I encourage anyone who is interested in our cultural heritage to come along.”

The event runs from10am to 5pm. Tickets are £25, and include a buffet lunch and refreshments available at www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/wish-you-were-here-heritage-conference-tickets-26079392164.
