A TEENAGE arsonist responsible for a string of fires in Great Yarmouth was today jailed for more than four years.

Steven Trudgill, 18, endangered 100 lives when he set fire to a campervan parked in Albert Road, Yarmouth. The fire spread to a nearby workshop, destroying the premises along with five vehicles and several giro planes.

Trudgill, of Harbord Crescent, Yarmouth, admitted arson and asked for 12 other fires which he started to be taken into account. These included a blaze at Seletar Services, a company serving the offshore industry, which caused £500,000 worth of damage.

Katharine Moore, in mitigation, said a psychiatric report showed no significant mental illness behind his offending.

Judge Philip Curl sentenced him to four year and four months. But he added: “This is offence is punishable by life imprisonment but, given your age and your confession, I do not consider that is justified.”
