wheelie bins will be making their way to households across the borough of Great Yarmouth from April 1.

On Wednesday night, Yarmouth Borough Council's cabinet agreed to set up a green waste collection scheme for up to 3,000 households that have expressed an interest in the two year recycling pilot scheme.

For the first year of the kerbside collection scheme householders will pay a collection fee of £48.50, which includes the price of a bin, and in the second year a fee of £37.50 will be levied.

The council will now sign a contract with Norse Ltd to run the pilot project, which could collect up to 2085 tonnes of green waste a year for recycling which would otherwise end up as landfill.

So far 3,000 households in the borough have expressed their willingness to have a third bin which would be used for grass cuttings, weeds, flowers, small twigs and branches, leaves and fruit and vegetable waste.

It will mean that from April 1 the households will have three wheelie bins for collection - brown, green and black.

Jim Shrimplin, cabinet member for regeneration and environment, said the bin fees were not excessive when compared to other local authority charges.
