Union demonstration over job cuts

PUBLISHED: 10:19 05 October 2010

Union members are to hold a day of action in Great Yarmouth to protest against public sector job cuts.

On Saturday the members of Yarmouth Against Public Service Cuts will be waving banners and flags in the Market Place to highlight the government’s planned budget cuts.

The group, which was formed after a public meeting organised by Yarmouth and District Trades Union Council, will be in the town centre from 10am to noon.

As well as highlighting the threat of job and benefit cuts, Saturday’s event hopes to drum up more interest in the group and its next meeting on October 20 at the Cobholm Community Centre at 7.30pm.

Group member Ruth Thacker said: “Our aim is to help everyone challenge the government’s cuts to tell it there is another way to balance the budget with real credible alternatives to killing off our welfare state and crippling the less well off in society.

“We want people to come on board and join this challenge to put a stop to this government’s intention to fundamentally change the way of life we have all worked for.”
