Restaurateur and television chef Heston Blumenthal, famous for whipping up bacon and egg ice cream, inspiring home cooks to be more daring and starring in the Waitrose advertising campaign with Norfolk’s own Delia Smith, will be in Great Yarmouth tomorrow.

He will be filming for a new Channel 4 show, Heston’s Fantastical Food, which promises to focus on dishes that built Britain. He is expected to arrive in the afternoon.

The chef is travelling the country for the programme, taking a different iconic British dish each week, deconstructing it and rebuilding it with a suitably Blumenthal-twist.

Yarmouth, once home to a huge herring industry, is more famous for its Market Place chip stalls than Michelin-starred restaurants and Blumenthal will be looking to reinvent the coastal favourite, fish, chips and mushy peas.

Whatever he cooks up, it is hoped the visit will boost the town’s culinary reputation.

Duncan Mallett, market manager at Great Yarmouth Borough Council, said: “We are delighted with the visit by Heston Blumenthal.

“This episode is going to focus on fish and chips and mushy peas, for which Great Yarmouth is rightly famous.”

Earlier this year, Yarmouth held its first Moveable Feast. Inspired by the well-established Norwich event, the night saw diners enjoy their aperitif, starter, main and pudding in four different restaurants while raising money for the Palliative Care East charity.

Next month, cafe owners, market stallholders and street food vendors will throw their weight behind the Great Yarmouth Food Festival.

The festival, coinciding with the county-wide EDP and Adnams-supported Norfolk Food & Drink Festival 2013, is set to take place in the Market Place on Thursday, September 26. “It will be a showcase of the wider range of culinary delights available from venues in the town,” said Mr Mallet. “There will be food demonstrations, tastings and stalls and local chefs will be cooking with seafood, meat and fruit and vegetables purchased from the permanent market.”

Anyone interested in booking a £10 pitch can contact council events organiser Laura Goodman on 01493 846125, or email lauragoodman@great-yarmouth.gov.uk.

And while it is no longer Yarmouth’s biggest industry, herring will take centre stage at nearby Hemsby on August 25, when the Hemsby Inshore Rescue Service lifeboat station hosts the popular Longshore Herring Festival, cooking freshly caught fish on barbecues on the beach.

Heston’s Fantastical Food, meanwhile, is set to air later this year.

Channel 4 said the show will not only reinvent classic fare, but look at the social history surrounding British food and cooking techniques that lead to modern day favourites, from Ploughman’s lunch and afternoon tea to the roast beef dinner.
