MORE accidents could happen at the Gapton Hall roundabout in Great Yarmouth unless a permanent solution to the notorious bottleneck is found, it has been warned.

MORE accidents could happen at the Gapton Hall roundabout in Great Yarmouth unless a permanent solution to the notorious bottleneck is found, it has been warned.

Since 1994 there have been 76 personal injury accidents on the roundabout and in 2006 this figure hit its highest level for eight years.

Prospective Conservative parliamentary candidate for Yarmouth, Brandon Lewis, has praised the work of the local councillors and businesses leaders in pressuring the Highways Agency to curb the roundabouts dangerous aspects.

Work is due to start next year to improve the roundabout with the instillation of hi-tech traffic lights which should ease congestion, but Brandon believes the changes are only a short-term solution to improving safety.

He said: “Local people are sick and tired of the traffic chaos on and around the Gapton Hall roundabout. They, like I, will welcome the news of the improvements, but we shouldn't think this is an end to the problems we face at this junction.

“We know that more houses are going to be built in the future which could render the current improvements obsolete. Yet again this government are trying to save money by putting in short-term solutions which will potentially have a negative affect a few years down the line.

“I am asking the various government departments involved in this decision to consider the long-term and invest today to make this junction as safe as it could possibly be.”
