COUNTY Council gritters were this afternoon out for the fifth time in 24 hours to keep Norfolk's main roads moving during a day of steady snowfall.

By 2pm this afternoon (Monday), 137 of Norfolk's 140 county schools had closed because of the weather.

COUNTY Council gritters were this afternoon out for the fifth time in 24 hours to keep Norfolk's main roads moving during a day of steady snowfall.

By 2pm this afternoon (Monday), 137 of Norfolk's 140 county schools had closed because of the weather.

With temperatures set to rise slightly this evening, snow may turn to sleet, starting a partial thaw. Although this could ease problems caused by snow, as skies clear later in the night temperatures are expected to fall below freezing once again, bringing a serious risk of ice on roads and pavements as melting snow re-freezes.

Meanwhile, any flurries had turned in rain in Great Yarmouth by 2pm washing away the light dusting of snow and ice in the town.

The County Council is planning to send out gritters on another salting run at 2am tomorrow morning (Tuesday), but motorists are urged to take particular care, especially on untreated roads.

In addition to the school closures, all Norfolk County Council's adult education classes have been cancelled for this afternoon and this evening (Mon). Wensum Lodge is closing at 5pm. King's Lynn Library has closed and Thetford Library is closing at 4pm.

Norwich City Council treats the roads within the city and will be sending out their own update when plans for this evening and overnight have been finalised.

The Highways Agency organises gritting of the trunk roads (A11, A47, A12).
