A ride operator at Great Yarmouth's Pleasure Beach has been fined £200 after he was paid more than £4,000 in disability living allowance while he worked.

Denis Kinch had been paid £4,076 in disability living allowance from March 2008 to June 2009 after he failed to tell the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) that he was fit to work.

Kinch, 44, of Trinity Avenue, Gorleston, had been on the allowance since 1999 because he had a problem with his bowel.

But Yarmouth Magistrates Court heard that after an operation to rectify the problem, Kinch neglected to tell the DWP he was working as a ride operator at the Pleasure Beach and as a cleaner for Norse Services.

Kinch was fined £200 after he pleaded guilty to failing to notify the DWP of a change in his circumstances.

His solicitor Rob Barley said that Kinch had not tried to defraud the DWP but in a “genuine oversight” had simply forgot to notify the DWP because he did not realise he had to after a change in computer systems.

Mr Barley said his client had no previous convictions and was determined never to repeat the fearful experience of going to court.

Kinch, who is paying the £4,076 back weekly, was also ordered to pay costs of £75.
