Norfolk’s disability swimming sensation Jessica-Jane Applegate has broken three world records.

The London 2012 Paralympic gold medallist was competing in the National Para-Swimming Disability Championships for short course (25 metres) in Manchester.

The UEA City of Norwich Swimming Club swimmer set new global bests in the S14 class, for swimmers with intellectual disabilities. Her records came in the 100-metre freestyle (57.86secs), 100m butterfly (1:05.02mins) and 200m freestyle (2:03.71mins), with a British record in the 200m inter-medley (2:26.29mins) in the mix as well.

It continues an eventful year for the 21-year-old, who saw her UK Sport funding cut late in 2016 despite having won two silver medals and one bronze at the Rio Paralympics, despite back and throat surgery ahead of the Games.

Appelgate faced a shortfall of around £15,000 after being moved from British Para-Swimming’s Podium programme to the Podium Potential programme ahead of Tokyo 2020 but Norwich-based not-for-profit enterprise agency Nwes are spearheading fund-raising efforts for the Burgh Castle-based swimmer.

Her form has been strong throughout 2017 although her hopes of performing well at the World Para-Swimming Championships in Mexico in September were brought to an end by an earthquake hitting the Central American country.
