Silvestre de Sousa resisted the delights of Glorious Goodwood for the seaside air at Great Yarmouth and was rewarded with a 142-1 four-timer in his relentless pursuit of regaining the jockeys’ championship.

The Brazilian struck on Midnight Wilde, Free Forum, Victory Angel and Annie Salts to take his tally in the title race to 89 and extend his lead over last season’s winner Jim Crowley.

De Sousa took the richest race on the card, the Shirley Gill Memorial Handicap, on Victory Angel (4-1 favourite). He set sail for home a furlong and half out on the Roger Varian-trained three-year-old, who kept up the gallop to score by two and a half lengths from Gulliver.

“He’s been running a bit disappointingly,” said De Sousa.

The 2015 champion got the ball rolling on Midnight Wilde (30-100 favourite), who got off the mark after two placed efforts in the Goodwood Festival Betting At 188Bet Novice Auction Stakes. He was then touched off by a head aboard Hope Is High by Trevor Whelan’s mount The Detainee (11-2) in the Get 1/4 Odds At 188Bet Handicap.

De Sousa soon returned to winning ways on the David Simcock-trained Free Forum (9-2), who got on top in the final half-furlong to open his account in the 188Bet.co.uk Handicap.

He completed his quartet on Annie Salts (3-1) for trainer Chris Dwyer, husband of his agent, Shelley, in the concluding Extra Place Races At 188Bet Handicap.

Anna Medici (5-4 favourite) made most under 7lb claimer Rosie Jessop in division one of the Galway Festival Betting At 188Bet Handicap as Sir Mark Prescott’s three-year-old filly supplemented a Chelmsford success in cosy fashion. Martin Dwyer steered Brendan Powell’s Garth Rocket (16-1) to success in division two.

Powell was a relieved trainer as it took him off the ‘cold list’.

“That was my first winner for about six weeks. I’ve had some 30 runners in that time and they’ve been running awful,” said the Upper Lambourn trainer. “In the last week to 10 days they’ve just started to run a bit better. They looked great and worked well, but they were wrong.”

Apprentice Marc Monaghan got Marco Botti’s Casina Di Notte (6-1) home by a head from Patching in the 188Bet Handicap, despite losing his whip.
