Denny Cup win for Acle’s aces

Playing Wymondham Dell in the Denny Cup was always going to be a competitive and thoroughly enjoyable game. Acle won 81-66 and meet Sole Bay in the next round.

At home Mark Elliott, Wyn Willimott, Tony Dunton and Tim Stone went 14-5 up at 10 ends. But with opposing skip John Ottaway playing well, by 19 ends it was 16-15. Good bowling on the final two ends gave a 20-15 victory, writes Brian Grint.

George Tubby’s rink at home were also up against a skip in good form and were 4-10 at 10 ends, 7-13 at 15 and finished 11-19.

Away, young Daniel Seabourne, Daniel Noble, Jamie Howlett and Robin Norman went 1-7 down at five ends but the tables turned dramatically as they won the following seven ends, including a six on the 12th, to go 19-7 up. Now in complete control with all four playing well, they went on to win 31-14.

Roy Himpleman, Arthur Joliffe, Rob Parker and Jason Roope were 8-9 at 10 ends, 12-14 at 15, then 17-15 at 18. This game, full of incidents, was won by two shots on the final end for a scoreline of 19-18.

At home against County Arts C, a win was essential to keep in the top three.

Keith Owen, Jim Cole, Ray Smith and Mick Askham were 6-2 up at five ends and won the next six ends to go 21-2 up. A four on the 13th and another on the 14th put them 29-5 up, and with Mick bowling well they went on to win 36-8.

Roy Roofe, Shane Mitchell, Willie Jeffries and Brian Grint were 5-3 at five ends and 8-7 at 10. A four on the 11th put their noses in front and good positive bowling gave them a 29-8 win.

Scott Watson, Alan Casburn, John Godsafe and Pat Beales were 2-8 down at six ends, nine each at 11. They scored a five on the 13th, dropped two fours to go 16-17 behind, then playing the final at 20 each skip Pat – under pressure and two down – played the perfect bowl, picking up the jack for two shots to win 22-20.

Ashley Smith’s rink were six each at eight ends 14-10 at 15 and 17-10 up with four ends to play. But in a tight final end they dropped a three to lose 17-18.

Result: 104-54 and 6-1 points.

On Sunday, Acle played North Walsham in the Egham Trophy.

At home Margaret Arnold, Jenny Kirby, Denis Goodley and Tony Dunton were 9-7 up at 10 ends, 13-11 at 15 and drew 18 each.

George Tubby’s rink came from 2-10 down to 19-10 up at 15 then dropped a six on the 20th and lost 21-22.

Away, Shirley Letticem Mark Elliott, Barbara Meeks and Lewis Moore were 4-9 down at 10, 14-12 at 15 but went on to win 19 -16.

Lillian Barber, Dawn Horne, Rob Parker and Jamie Howlett scored a five on the ninth to go into a 14-4 lead, by 15 ends it was 21-6 and they won 31-8. Result: 89-64.

All clubs who play in the summer Lovewell Blake Malta Cup Leagues should note the annual meeting is in the Yare Room at Acle Recreation Centre at 7.15 pm on Tuesday, December 14.
