Newmarket trainer George Margarson executed a plan when three-year-old Protected Guest landed the £24,000 feature on day one of the Eastern Festival at Great Yarmouth.

Ridden by Jane Elliott and returned at 10/1, the gelding beat Shuhood and Bombyx to take the six-runner Dan Hague Bookmaker Handicap over 11 furlongs.

“We’ve saved him for this race since he won at Yarmouth in August. He showed us he liked it here so the plan was to come back for this race. He’s progressive, a big raw thing, and he’s done the job,” said Margarson.

Impressive newcomer Magic J looked a sparkling prospect when landing the novice stakes for trainer Ed Vaughan under Oisin Murphy.

The £950,000 yearling was dropped out early only to be delivered perfectly by Murphy at 7/4 to beat favourite Swindler.

Swindler, under William Buick, finished second on debut and had to settle for runners-up spot again, beaten by a Scat Doddy colt with a big future.

“He’s a lovely horse and a lovely prospect and I think he is a horse that we will hear a lot about in the future,” said Murphy.

“He’s in the Dewhurst but may need another run before then, so we will have to see,” said Vaughan.

The Mark Johnston-trained Massam was too good for his rivals in the opener. Richard Kingscote pushed the colt to the front from the start and he controlled matters to win by five lengths at 1/2.

Norwich City director Michael Foulger’s Right About Now scored at 7/1 under Lewis Edmunds for trainer Chris Dwyer in the 11-furlong handicap. Beaten a week ago by Long Call, Right About Now reversed that result with Albert Boy second and Long Call third.

Dwyer followed up in the six-furlong handicap when his Faithful Promise and Precious Plum, 12/1 and 50/1, finished first and second under Jo Gordon and Edmunds respectively. It completed a 103/1 win double for Dwyer while the straight forecast for the sprint returned at 519/1.

Debutant Breathtaking Look, for trainer Stu Williams, got a terrible start in the six furlongs novice stakes but charged through to score at 8/1 under Kingscote, who in doing so completed a double.

The finale went to trainer Roger Varian’s Queen of Desire, a comfortable 13/2 winner under Jack Mitchell.
