Gorleston Ladies gearing up for Mail Classic encounter

PUBLISHED: 14:46 12 July 2012

Attention will be firmly focussed on the Gorleston GC Ladies team this Monday as they welcome Spalding Golf Club for the Mail On Sunday seventh round fixture with the first match scheduled for a 12.30pm start.

Whilst Gorleston have home course advantage, there is no doubt their Lincolnshire opponents are taking the match very seriously and their squad made the journey from Spalding this week for a full practice round.

Hopefully as many members as possible, both male and female will be present in support of the Ladies.

The Ladies’ friendly team were in good form on Friday of last week with a 4-0 win away at Mundesley in match number five of the season.

In national competition this week there was success for the pairing of James Chadd and David James in the HowDidiDo National Pairs as they eventually overcame opponents Martin Butcher and Jamie Marsh of Costessey Park by two holes in their replayed match with the first encounter being abandoned because of bad light at the sixth extra hole. Both pairs had mutually agreed to replay the whole match rather than continue with the play-off holes. James and David will entertain the Rookery Park pair of Steve Coften and Nathan Wilkinson in the next round.

In County Cup action and regrettably three men’s defeats was the outcome. Best performance of the three came from the Beaumont Trophy team who lost by a slender two holes at Rookery Park in a match in which Gorleston pairs recorded two victories and one tie but suffered a crushing and decisive seven hole defeat in the third game.

The Parks Trophy team travelled to the unfamiliar Hintlesham Hall and in very soggy conditions succumbed to an 11-hole defeat.

The Stenson Shield team who had one of the longest possible trips for a county match to Newton Green where the home side duly avenged their defeat in the Hambro Cup earlier in the season by recording a 7½ to 4½ win.

Thank you to all the team sponsors for 2012, namely Graham Hacon of 3SUN for the Beaumont Trophy team, Brian Duffy of Steel Services for the Parks Trophy team and Douglas Gray of D & J Metals for both the Hambro Cup and Stenson Shield teams.

Both Alex Holmes and Danny Western failed to make the halfway cut playing in the EuroPro Tour event at Fota Island in the Irish Republic and Stephen Crosby and Kevin Woods found the going tough in the English Mid-Amateur Championship at Saunton, Devon, also failing to make the cut for the final round.

The club Championship for the Sir John Drughorn Trophy had to be abandoned last Sunday with the course becoming waterlogged before any of the morning rounds were completed. This has now been re-scheduled for Sunday, August 26.

One domestic competition which avoided much of the damp weather so prevalent this year was the Harold Mason Cup for seniors and course conditions were perfectly suited for Mike Haylett who recorded 41 points for victory.
