A handicap worth almost £20,000 to the winner is set to spice up the annual Ladies Night at Great Yarmouth racecourse on Wednesday evening.

Former Spice Girl Melanie C is due to entertain what is certain to be a big holiday crowd following the seven-race card.

The 7.15pm feature race, the Diomed Developments Claiming Handicap over six furlongs, features six runners, headed by top weight Raucous under Jim Crowley for Robert Cowell.

The five-year-old gelding was a runner-up at Newcastle at the end of June and has to run off a three-pound higher mark in a heat which also sees Eastern Impact in action. The Richard Fahey seven-year-old’s last win was in the Benbough Stakes at Ascot in October 2015, the gelding recently fourth of 14 at Newcastle in June.

Jamie Spencer partners the Stuart Williams-trained Hart Stopper, a Newmarket runner-up a month ago while champion jockey Silvester De Sousa rides the Roger Varian colt Victory Again, a course winner last August and whose most recent effort was in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot.

Biggest field sees nine go in the 7.45pm Aeropak Handicap in which Arcanista and Wild Acclaim meet again. At the course on June 13, Arcanista, under De Sousa for Chris Dwyer, beat Wild Acclaim, under Nicola Currie for Phil McEntee by a short head.

Joshua Bryan rides Alan Bailey’s Strictly Carter and nine-time winner Deeds Not Words holds hopes for Newmarket trainer Michael Wigham and jockey John Egan.

The racing starts at 5.35pm with a lady riders’ handicap in which favourite is Oh So Sassy under Jane Elliott for Chris Wall. The eight-year-old mare was runner-up at Windsor.

Three newcomers make their debut in the 6.10pm novice stakes including Kingman colt Motalaqqy under Crowley for Varian and the William Haggas-trained Olympic Glory colt Astronaut under Andrea Atzeni.

Seven fillies go in the 6.40pm seven-furlong clash in which Atzeni has the ride on the favourite Chippie Hill, trained by Roger Charlton and making her debut. Another debutant is Progressive Dawn under De Sousa for William Knight.

La Isle Bonita beat Chetan by a head at the course recently and the two re-oppose at 8.20pm while the finale at 8.50pm sees Liam Keniry on market leader Spanish Star for Patrick Chamings.

Selections: 5.35pm The Lacemaker, 6.10pm Motalaqqy, 6.40pm Progressive Dawn, 7.15pm Victory Angel, 7.45pm Deeds Not Words, 8.20pm Chetan, 8.50pm Mother of Dragons.
